Sri Andal’s thirty verses for the thirty days of this holy month, dedicated to the worship and praise of the Lord to the exclusion of all other celebrations and earthly events. Sri Andal’s story very briefly is as follows.

Now being in the US, you dont feel whether its maargazhi or kaarthigai or aadi unless you really follow it with the tamil calendar. Back in India, you feel its kaarthigai maasam when the loudspeakers start playing ayyapan songs in the morning. You know its maargazhi when people go for bhajans or you hear thirppavai on the radio early in the morning.

Andal was discovered as a baby by her foster father Periazhwar in his garden at a town called Srivilliputhur in Tamilnadu India. Andal grew up with intense devotion to the Lord and was so fond of Lord Krishna that she pictured herself as one of the Gopikas and aspired to wed the Lord. Her father used to make a garland for the Lord everyday and take it to the temple and adorn the God.

Each verse can actually be understood in many poetic and profoundly philosophical ways. The last nine stanzas are on the glories of the Lord. On receiving his blessings Andal lists her demands; milk for the vrata, white conch, lamps, flowers, and rich costume and jewellery, plenty of ghee and butter. The concluding stanza is an envoie identifying her as the daughter of Vishnucittar who made this garland of 30 pasurams and says those who recite with devotion will have Lord’s blessings. Verses and Explanation [ ] The Thiruppavai also includes 3 thaniyans (literally, 'singletons' or stand alone verses) composed by later authors to introduce older texts. The first tanniyan, 'Nila tungastana. ' in Sanskrit was composed by Parasara Pattar, and the next two tanniyans, 'Anna vayal pudhuvai. ' and 'Choodi kodutha.'
