At that time, I had a DJ business and I got interested in the organization and the elimination of paper. I was swamped with a lot of expenses that, at the end of the year, when I did my taxes, I had a shoebox that was completely stuffed with receipts, contracts and print-outs from the business. I had to go from one to three shoeboxes at one point in my career and I thought that if I could get rid of all the shoeboxes, my house would look a lot neater and I would fit back into my tiny office. I use the NeatDesk every year and I use it particularly for any tax-related item.

I black out all account numbers for anything going to the Cloud. Very frustrating to have 7 years of receipts and have to change now I’m going to try and re install one the computer I spent hours scanning on today in the morning and see if that works as it DOES seem to work that way though not consistently and it hasn’t synched to the Cloud in a week with error messages and ‘try later’. However, in practice, Neat’s software too often makes simple tasks unnecessarily complicated. While Fujitsu’s ScanSnap Manager is more fragmented, this actually makes it easier to focus on a single task. Just want to print a scan? Click Scan to Print and you’re done.

One was identified properly but the other one picked up a name I have never heard of, and that appears no where on the statement. Worse, that name is now probably fixed permanently in my vendor list. The many things that made Neat great are totally missing. I cannot rely on the old desktop version because Windows could do an unsolicited update and kill the product, leaving me with nothing. I am paying over $100 per year for reduced capabilities and no assurance of usability. I would gladly pay an annual fee to keep the desktop software alive.

You know, like a scanner. Your Neat data is not gone. If you have the Legacy software, then you can recover a corrupt database. I have done it MANY times. Basically, you have to create a new database in a different location.

Use Neat to organize files into different built-in categories (documents, receipts, business cards) as well as your own user-defined folders. The app creates searchable PDFs, doing so automatically during a scan or separately at any later time. However, search results only list file names, not where in a file the selected text is located. While Neat can extract text from a document, such as for filling in receipt or business card text boxes, don’t expect anything close to 100 percent accuracy (to be fair, I don’t know any software that does this well). You can also copy/paste text from a scanned image to a word processing app. If you like the sound of Neat for Mac software, but not the NeatDesk hardware, you can purchase ($80) as a stand-alone software product.
